Engineered hardwood is real wood on top of a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks identical to solid hardwood underfoot but won't cup, gap, or buckle when humidity shifts, which matters in a Central Ohio climate that swings from dry, heated winter air to muggy summer humidity in the same house. Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
Yes, if the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, it can be sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) should be screened and recoated rather than fully sanded.
Water-resistant, not waterproof. It tolerates the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a dishwasher leak or burst pipe should still be cleaned up promptly.
Yes, this is one of engineered hardwood's biggest advantages. We follow manufacturer guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation to prevent gapping.
